| Guide | The year is 2038 and the once-great city of London lies in ruins as a result of the invasion by the minions of Hell. The Knights Templar hold the knowledge on how to battle the demonic forces, but they too were silenced and ended up hiding just to stay alive. What befell London spread to nations, eradicating human lives to signal the process called "The Burn" – the alteration and assimilation of the human world into the demons.
Mankind, or whatever's left of it, struggles to survive by hiding in the shadows. This was the opportunity they needed to band together and strike back. It is at this point where mankind learned how to travel undetected, how to forge weapons powerful enough to go through barriers and defenses, and how to use arcane powers. Every learning leads to the ultimate goal of defeating the demons, and consequently closing the Hellgate.
Welcome to Hellgate: London!
The plot may not be as unique as you might have come to expect from a new game, but you have to admit that it is intriguing enough to warrant a closer look. It's important to keep in mind that the game is an action role-playing game that has single and multiplayer options. The online component features MMORPG-like elements including formation of guilds and PvP. With that in mind, you have the option to play the game all by your lonesome self or get together with friends and strangers to play the multiplayer mode. Either way, you have to start somewhere.
As with other MMORPG, you need to start at character creation. You have plenty of character options which include the following: Name, Gender, Face, Hair style, Facial Hair, Accessories, Skin Color, Hair Color, Height, Bulk, and the most important of all, Faction/ Class. All these options (except class) can be customized by simply scrolling through the choices.
FACTIONS AND CLASSES
As you delve deeper into the game, your character has to choose your faction and class. Keep in mind that your overall gameplay experience is dependent on the faction/class you choose. Factions represent different ideals, philosophies, training, and combat techniques. Each Faction has 2 classes that further distinguish one faction from the other.
THE TEMPLAR
After Earth's destruction in the hands of the Demons, the Templars deemed themselves the necessary leadership caste of the force that remains in Lond. They serve as the frontline in the battle. They are composed of noble men and women who wish to preserve humanity by smiting the Great Dark.
There are two classes under The Templar faction:
1. Guardian
Guardians are considered the frontliners as the they lead the charge in the Templar's struggle. They wield swords and shields as they get in close contact with the Demons. They are most effective when overwhelmed and surrounded.
2. Blademaster
Blademasters are high-DPS melee fighers. They dual wield weapons and have preference for very sharp objects in which they use to inflict pain to the enemies. They are fontliners that deal massive damage in one hit, allowing others to attack by range weapons, making sure those who aren't prepared to take damage from the Demons, can safely launch attack from afar.
THE CABALISTS
Cabalists are seekers of knowledge who study The Great Dark and use what they have learned to defeat the forces of evil and save humanity from the clutches of evil. When properly equipped and strategically deployed, a single Cabalist can be as powerful as an army.
There are two classes under The Cabalist faction:
1. Summoner
Summoners have the ability to control elements of nature and the Demon. They use this ability to distract and destroy enemies as a way to protect casters and other allies.
2. Evoker
Evokers have the ability to manipulate storms of condensed supernatural fury by funneling raw power into damage-amplifying Focus items. This just means that they make use of spells and items to render enemies helpless.
THE HUNTERS
Hunters are highly-trained ex-military operatives who are hardened long before the Demons came to Invade Earth. They make use of hyper-advanced technology which makes them effective long-range specialists. They never surrender, they just survive.
There are two classes under The Hunter faction:
1. Marksman
Hunters are highly-trained ex-military operatives. They know their weapons very well and make use of them in any given combat situation. They deal the most damage possible using their long-range weapons.
2. Engineer
Engineers use their knowledge of theoretical science and practical engineering to build Drones, Bots, and Weapons, which in turn are used to combat the evil forces. They provide massive firepower that render enemies helpless.
Now that you know the factions and classes available in the game, you can choose the one that best fits your playing style. Just keep in mind that since you are in a new territory, you might want to create a character that can dish out and take damage mainly because you are still unfamiliar with the area and it will be a little more difficult if your character keeps getting damage as you explore the area. If you keep dying, you lose the momentum at the onset.
COMBAT SYSTEM
The combat system of the game is direct and real-time. This means that for every right-click (or left-click) of the mouse button, your character will either keep swinging at monsters or will keep firing at them.
Depending on the class you choose, you can fight monsters by melee or ranged combat. If you are a Blademaster or Guardian, you will rely on your hand-to-hand combat skills to stay alive. To engage an enemy, you just move towards the monster. If within range, the HUD crosshair will turn green. If monsters are out of range, the HUD crosshair will turn red. The green light indicates a direct hit and will render the monsters dead or helpless for a time. Melee combat can also be done using bare first.
When using a ranged weapon or spell, use the Mouse Look to place monsters within the HUD crosshairs. The same Range indicators apply on ranged weapons. You will just have a slightly different HUD readouts that also indicate weapon power.
INTERACTION
With NPCs
As with other online multiplayer game, your character can interact with NPCs and items in the Hellgate world. If you wish to talk to NPCs, simply move up to them and use the Mouse Look to place the target within the HUD crosshairs, then left-click. A talk bubble icon indicates that the NPC is able to interact with you and have a dialogue.
You can also break items such as barrels, boxes, and crates. Sometimes, items will appear from the smashed items. You can pick up the item by pressing "F" or if it's a Palladium, you can just move to it and it will automatically be grabbed.
With Other Players
Adventuring with other players online is always a fun way to complete quests. If you just want to chat with other players, you just have to hit the enter key to activate the chat window. Here's how to do it:
/town - speak to players within the vicinity
/w - speak privately to a specific player
/p - speak with everyone in the party
You can also trade items with other players. When in town or non-combat area, you may invite another player to trade with you. You just have to approach the player until the HUD crosshairs change into a talk bubble. Then press and hold the left mouse button to bring up the radial menu and choose Trade, then release the mouse button.
These are the basic things you need to know before exploring Hellgate: London. It will help you get started in the game but it does not guarantee survival at higher level quests :P That's why there will be more Hellgate: London guides, strategies, and tips from Skryer in the coming days. |
